River in Action is a small environmental non-profit organization that provides opportunities for youth to engage with each other and with the natural environment through STEAM workshops, clean-ups, and community events in South Los Angeles. Since joining ReDesignLA as a mentee in 2022, River in Action has connected its existing educational programming to its ReDesignLA work while also completing the project identification process. By building trust with teachers and school administrators at Miramonte Elementary School, RIA successfully submitted an LAUSD SEEDS application in partnership with the school in 2023 and partnered with CWH on a Cal Fire Green Schoolyards Planning Grant. Currently, RIA is leading school community education, outreach, and engagement activities at Miramonte Elementary School and Edison Middle School to support of a school community-led nature-based design process. With Cal Fire planning dollars, both school greening projects will reach 50 percent design by the end of 2024.
